FoodWorks Natural Market was founded in 1992 by Ralph and Bonnie Johnson in Guilford, CT.

Ralph Johnson became interested in natural foods in the 1970s and started his first business delivering natural foods directly to homes in New York City in 1976. Although that business was unsustainable due to gas shortages, Ralph went one to work at a number of different natural foods stores in New York City before he and Bonnie purchased FoodWorks Natural Market in 1992. The first store was located at 1055 Boston Post Road in Guilford and was expanded a few years later. A second location in Old Saybrook was opened in 1996. Today FoodWorks has two locations in Guilford and Old Saybrook, CT.

Ralph’s vision was to help people discover the joy of eating good, clean food and to make natural foods as accessible as possible to the community. He strove to ensure that the products sold at FoodWorks were the cleanest possible and that customers could find variety with an emphasis on local and small batch products.

Ralph passed away in August 2019, but FoodWorks continues to be a family run business and his legacy of eating well and consciously lives on.
